Ngoc Vung - The island and the beach




Ngoc Vung island and beaches is about 34km away from mainland. Around the island, there are beautiful beaches. It has Van Xuan mountain 182m high, an archaeological site of Halong culture of 45,000 m2. It's a soil island with an area of 12 km2 so that Ngoc Vung is inhabited. It has an ancient harbor from the eleventh century and the ancient ruins of the Mac and the Nguyen dynasties. Close to the beautiful island are the two small rocky islets Hon Net and Phuong Hoang. From high above, the beautiful island looks like a velvet shawl with white fringe, floating on water. In the east of the island there are sandy beaches extending for several kilometers. In the center of Ngoc Vung island, there is an acacia tree that in the year 1962, president Ho Chi Minh stood in its shade talking to people.

Ngoc Vung (the glow of pearls) got its name due to its long history with pearls. There were many many rare pearls on the island that in the night it glowed bright all of the area. In the old time, the people living on the island by hunting pearls on the seabed. The pearl was famous for its beauty and brilliant.
In 1937, the first stone tools belonging to Halong Culture period, were discovered, which led to the excavation, archaeological researches to learn about the secrets of the ancient Halong. On the island there are ancient ruins of Cong Yen wharf, Van Don trading port.

Today, people in the region are still diving for pearls as well as farming for them. From aboard tourists cruises, you can see the pearl farming bobbing on the sea.
