Bai Tho mountain



Bai Tho Mountain is in the center of Halong City. It is a 106m high limestone mountain, looks like a castle with three towers bobbing on the fortified city walls. Formerly, it's also called Truyen Dang (means The Beacon). This is a valuable relic of cultural and historical importance. Mountain has inspired many poets. Some poems carved in stones of kings who perambulated through this area and were inspired by the beauty of Halong bay. In February 1468, in a perambulation through the northeast, king Le Thanh Tong had a poem carved into the cliff in the south of the mountain. From then on, the mountain has been called Bai Tho Mountain. 261 years later (1729), in his naval reviewing on the South China sea, lord Trinh Cuong had a poem as the reply to the king Le Thanh Tong's poem carved nearby. Besides, there are poems by Nguyen Can and of several other poets carved around the mountain. At the foot of Bai Tho Mountain, there is Long Tien Pagoda built in 1940 to worship Buddha and generals of Tran Dynasty who have contributed to the country. The pagoda has a unique architecture. There is a path leading the mountain top right beside the pagoda. At Ben Doan pier, close to the Bai Tho foot, there are also a small temple built by the boats owners who regularly traded across the South China Sea. There is a temple for the worships of Tran Quoc Nghien general, the eldest son of Tran Quoc Tuan who contributed in many fights against the invaders especially Mongol invaders in 1288 for the third time. In the 1913 the temple were rebuit and remaining unchanged till now.

Climbing on Bai Tho mountain is a fascinating activity. Once stand on top of Bai Tho Mountain, visitors will not stop surprising from the magnificent landscapes of Halong Bay, in the distance is the vast blue water body with dots of rocky islets and bobbing boats. Looking to the sky with huge clouds when surrounded by flowers and trees with bird songs is so peaceful.
